Hard Addition and Hard Multiplication Word Problems
Hard Multiplication problems are very similar to Hard Addition problems. For example:
Hard Addition: I have 2 pennies. You have 3 more pennies
than I have. How many pennies do you have?
Hard Multiplication: I have 2 pennies. You have 3 times as
many pennies as I have. How many pennies do you have?
In both cases the problem involves two sets of pennies and the relationship between those sets.
- In both cases it is given that "I have 2 pennies."
- In both cases the relationship between the pennies that "I have" and the pennies that "you have" is given.
- In both cases the questions is, "How many pennies do you have?"
The difference
between Hard Addition and Hard Multiplication is only in the way in
which the relationship is expressed. In one case you have 3 more
pennies than I have and in the other case you have 3 times as
many pennies
as I have.
