Easy Measurement
Rose was 5 years and
8 months at the time that this video was made.
The Problem
You have 12 candies and you would like to give 3 of them to each of
your friends.
How many friends can you give 3 candies to?
What To Look For In This Video
- After I tell Rose that there are 12 candies and that she is to give 3 to each of her friends I think that she anticipates the question, "How many friends?" If so, that shows an excellent understanding of this type of problem.
- On the other hand, Rose needs clarification as to whether or not she is also supposed to get 3 candies. That is a perfectly reasonable question. And it is not something that she can figure out on her own.
- I was disappointed that Rose did not think on her own to use physical objects to model the problem. That word problems can be solved by modeling is fundamental.
