Shortcuts - Easy Multiplication
Rose was 5 years and
8 months at the time that this video was made.
The Problem
There are 4 lambs, and each lamb has 4 legs. How many legs are there
altogether?
What To Look For In This Video
- To model this problem one would first represent the 4 lambs, then represent the 4 legs on each lamb, and finally count all the "legs."
- Rose doesn't represent the lambs at all. And she uses 4 fingers on each hand to represent the legs on just 2 of the lambs. She then counts her fingers one-by-one (to get to 8). She then counts those very same 8 fingers again starting with 9.
- Rose apparently remembers that 2 (lambs) + 2 (lambs) = 4 (lambs).
